Many years ago I was lent a book about something called the Underground Railroad which was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early-to-mid 19th century, and used by African American slaves to escape into free states and Canada.

One of the stories in the book truly inspired me. Harriet Tubman was born into Slavery in Maryland in 1822 and, as a girl escaped into Philadelphia using the Underground Railroad to help her. But once there she immediately returned to rescue other family and friends and finally her parents making the dangerous journey a total of 19 times.

The legend (which sadly seems to be just that) was that the safe houses along the route of the Underground Railroad would hang quilts on their clothes lines to signal a house was safe for runaway slaves.

Whether the quilts on the clothes lines story is true or not Harriet Tubman certainly existed and her bravery and selflessness truly inspired me and I designed the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Quilt in celebration of her remarkable life and it is one of my favourite quilt designs today.

And now I have made this amazing quilt into a very special Block of the Month. The quilt – whose finished size is approx. 58 x 68 inches, tells the tale of Harriet Tubman block by block. Each block has a name and each names has a remarkable story attached. For example the Monkey Wrench Block is named after a blacksmith called Frederick Douglass and the Wagon Wheel block was inspired by the carts that Harriet used to transport her parents during their escape because they were too old and frail to walk. So every month in this remarkable block of the month you will not only get all the usual fabric and instructions etc you need to make up the quilt but also the story behind each block so the story will unfurl as you stitch your quilt.

Over the years I have made this quilt up several times and taught it many times (it’s great for building up your quilt skills) and it uses the quilt as you go method. The main picture shows the original quilt I made when I first designed it and to make this Block of the Month truly special it is available exclusively in brand new colour ways – chosen specifically to reflect the era of the Civil War they are of the very best quality and sourced from top manufacturers including Moda and Makower.
